Nigerian military: 'Mastermind' of deadly bombings arrested

A video of Abubakar Shekau, who claims to be the leader of the Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, is shown in September 2013. Boko Haram is an Islamist militant group waging a campaign of violence in northern Nigeria. The group's ambitions range from the stricter enforcement of Sharia law to the total destruction of the Nigerian state and its government. Click through to see recent bloody incidents in this strife-torn West African nation:

The Nigerian military has arrested a man who it says masterminded recent bomb attacks in two different cities that killed at least 70 people.
The suspect was arrested along with two other people at a checkpoint in the northeastern city of Gombe, the military said in a statement Wednesday.
One of the other suspects was shot trying to escape, the military said, without saying whether the shooting was fatal.
The statement didn't identify any of the suspects by name or give details on why the military believes one of them orchestrated the deadly bombings.

'Highly placed terrorist'

Military and state security operatives had trailed the man, described as "a highly placed terrorist," before he was caught hiding in a trailer at the checkpoint, the statement said.
He is suspected of masterminding bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos on Sunday and in the north-central city of Zaria on Tuesday.
The Jos attacks, one on a restaurant and one on a mosque, killed at least 44 people, according to authorities. The Zaria bombing hit a local government office, killing at least 26 people, officials said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. But the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has been linked to deadly attacks in Jos in the past.
The military's statement Wednesday on the arrests didn't mention Boko Haram by name.

Government open to talks with Boko Haram

Northern and central Nigeria have seen frequent attacks on civilian and government targets since last week, leaving more than 200 people dead.
Witnesses and government officials have blamed last week's attacks on Boko Haram, the terrorist group that has been fighting the Nigerian government for more than a decade, pushing to bring an extreme version of Islamic law, or Sharia, to the masses.
Amid the growing death toll, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's government has said it would be open to talks with the militants.
"Most wars, however furious or vicious, often end around the negotiation table. So, if Boko Haram opts for negotiation, the government will not be averse to it," Femi Adesina, a presidential adviser, said in a recent statement.
Buhari was elected earlier this year and pledged to focus on the fight against the Islamist group, which has pledged allegiance to ISIS. But so far, he has struggled to stem the heavy bloodshed in northeast Nigeria and beyond.

7-Year-Old Boy Discovered Living With Pigs And Can't Speak Or Understand Any Words

7-Year-Old Boy Discovered Living With Pigs And Can't Speak Or Understand Any Words

Some social workers have discovered a seven-year-old boy living with pigs in a pen after pictures emerged of him riding with a pig in the back of his father’s farm tricycle.

Apparently, the boy communicated better with the animals than humans after he was found in a pig pen in their family house in Fangyu City, in central China’s Henan Province.

Liu Hongbo was so messed up with some cuts and bruises which he possibly sustained from the pigs. At seven years old, little Hongbo (a pseudonym) can barely speak a word.

The boy from Qingfeng County, central China's Henan Province, has had a miserable childhood. His father is too poor to send him to school and his mentally ill mother frequently abuses him. No friends, no proper food and nobody to properly care for him. His only companionship is from the pigs kept by his father.

On Monday, a report carried by Henan's local newspaper the Puyang Morning Daily revealed the tragic life of Hongbo grabbed attention nationwide.

According to the report, Hongbo spends almost every day playing in the hog pen behind his ramshacklehome. His father, surnamed Liu, makes a living by collecting swill and taking passengers on his tricycle.

"Liu comes back home only during the wee hours of night and goes back to work early in the morning," the newspaper reported, adding that the family is too poor to send Hongbo to school.

Pictures of Hongbo sitting on ground with disheveled hair and a dirty face have gone viral on microblog Sina Weibo, evoking widespread anger and sympathy. Volunteers with the local Puyang Love Association (PYLA) came to help Hong after hearing of Hongbo's story, bringing food and helping him shave his head.

Local villagers said the scars are a result of child abuse from Hongbo's mother, who suffers from mental disorder. She was often seen grabbing his head and hitting him against a wall. She also keeps the child confined to their yard year round.

"We would interfere, but she just does not listen to us," a villager was quoted as saying.

After the discovery, neighbours revealed that the boy was often heard crying after being beaten by his mother.

“When somebody goes round sometimes to tell her to stop, she just smiles as if nothing has happened. She’s always beating him and throwing him around the house,” said one of the neighbours.

Hongbo's father told local media that the family is extremely poor, and that his family members -his mother, wife and Hongbo- all depend on his earnings made via collecting swill in the county in the day, and taking passengers on his tricycle at night.

"We need at least 300 yuan (48 U.S. dollars) to pay electricity and other expenses each month, which is too much to afford," Liu said.

The 7-year-old was discovered outside on a pile of clothes in an empty pigpen and “smelt like a pig” but the social workers, from a nearby children’s home, were unable to take him away as they need permission from city officials before being able to intervene.

"When we finished shaving Hongbo's long hair, we found scars on his head," said Mr Zhang, a local volunteer.

On Sina Weibo, a post about it has been forwarded more than 3,000 times as of Tuesday noon, drawing tons of comments that criticized the government and the parents for their irresponsibility.

Though they believe that he might still learn to speak and have a normal life as time goes on.

ICrossChina reports that the boy has been sent to stay with his aunt and will be admitted to a local hospital for a physical examination.
